Who We Are
A Motel With a Proper History
The Furlong has been a fixture in Hawera since 1975 — half a century of welcoming guests from every corner of New Zealand and beyond. The name comes from our neighbour, the Egmont Racing Club, where a furlong is the classic unit of a horse-race distance.
In 2022 we undertook a full renovation of all 23 rooms — keeping the beloved chalet-style character while upgrading every fixture and fitting. The result is a motel that feels genuinely fresh, without losing the warmth that's kept guests coming back for decades.
1975
The Beginning
The Furlong Motel opened its doors on Waihi Road, Hawera — offering travellers a comfortable, affordable base for exploring South Taranaki.
2000s
Growing Reputation
Decades of consistent hospitality built a loyal following among long-haul truck drivers, race-goers from Egmont Racing Club, and families discovering the region.
2022–24
Full Renovation
All 23 rooms were stripped back and rebuilt — new beds, heat pumps, kitchenettes, bathrooms, and landscaping — while keeping the character that made The Furlong home.
Today
Still Going Strong
Under the same locally-owned stewardship, The Furlong continues to welcome everyone from weekend explorers to contractors on long-term stays.
Pets Welcome
Bring the Whole Family
Four-legged family members are welcome at The Furlong — by arrangement and with a small $20 fee. Our grassy courtyard gives dogs the run around they need after a long drive.
Just give us a heads-up when you book and we'll make sure your room and the courtyard are ready for you both.
